AMOS IN AMERICA

20-1

God is good to us
No doubt about it.
We are at ease in Zion
Quite comfortable
Thanks be to God and Maalox
Cadillac and Magnavox.
We are good to ourselves too.

And God is good to the leper
No doubt about it.
He has one finger less than yesterday
But he can still count his blessings
On his toes. He can even crawl
To communion today in Calcutta
And the lack of a nose on his face
Does not disfigure worship
Or make faith unclean.
Often he hears the Word better
With one remnant ear
Than we hear with two.
White but not with whitewash
He has salvation
What more can he need?

And God is good to the Czech pastor
No doubt about it.
We envy his prayer life
Twelve years of solitary refinement
In a Prague cell to pray.
The only breaks in his prayer time
Are the blows
That have already broken his knees
Permanently to a kneel.

God is good to us
No doubt about it.
We are at east in Zion
Quite comfortable
Thanks be to God and Jacuzzi
Foreign trade and diners club.
We are good to ourselves too.

The have-nots are everywhere. And making a mockery of the reality of the kingdom are churches filled mostly with haves–not using what they know to raise the standard of the have-nots.
